"What was she doing with him?" Mark thought, somewhat bitterly. Even as he said it, he knew. It was obvious to everyone. Jeff wasn't handsome; far from it, actually. He was distinguishably ugly. His eyes were too close together and sat perched looking over the great hump that was the bridge of his nose. His face tapered to a gap toothed, crooked smile, that was as unsettling as it was yellow. He was, in a word, repulsive.
She, on the other hand, was lovely. Attractive, both as a person and as a woman. Dark locks framed an angelic face; she turned heads and stopped hearts. But she was more than a perfect figure. She was intelligent, she did charity work, and she was kind to all she met. She was, in a word, amazing.
Which brought Mark back to his original question, "What the heck was she doing with him?" It wasn't for money. Mark was aware of Jeff's financial situation, or more accurately, lack thereof. No, there was only one answer, though it stuck in Mark's craw and kept him up at night.
She was with him because he made her laugh. He was witty and charming. She was with him only because she liked his personality.
How could she be so shallow? She was dating him only because of what he could give her, deep belly laughs and a good time. Moreover, how was Mark supposed to compete with that?! If she were a gold digger, he could get wealthy and win her over. Were she only interested in looks, plastic surgeons dot the landscape. But Mark realized that it would be impossible to fundamentally change who he was as a person. No, she was unattainable to Mark, all because she was so shallow as to want someone with more than a fat wallet or a pretty face. "A good personality's overrated," he consoled himself.
